The Elephant Walk

Service      

The number of servers that were paying attention to the floor varied from five to nine on the occasion of separate reviews. There were both male and female servers working the inside and outside of the establishment. They were wearing black trousers with orange tee-shirts or polo shirts with the logo of the café on them. They also had pouches that were belted around their waists, on top of the tee-shirts that were not tucked into their trousers. The appearance of the servers was uniform, although there was questionable neatness in some of the ladies that were wearing dingy tee-shirts that appeared to be stained.
 

The delay between the time that a customer sat down, and the time a server came to the table was very short, and in one case even non-existent. The servers seemed to be aware of the menu and what was or were not available on the menu that day. They were so aware in fact, that on the occasion of one review, when a dish that the reviewer wanted was not available, the waitress made a recommendation that was well received.
 

Although the servers were quick to get to the table and take the customer's order, the time that it took for the food to appear at the table was considerable. This is perhaps an aspect that can be remedied by the management of the establishment, by speeding up the process in the kitchen to match the speed of the staff on the floor of the café. That would enhance the service provided, in the opinion of the reviewers.
 

Once the bill is asked for, it is a matter of a couple of minutes until it is at the table. The billing system is professional, carrying all the vital information such as the address and contact information of the establishment; it even had the logo of the café, which is a troop of elephants.

 
 
Food        

The menu offered at the café is complete and would bring envy to restaurants, let alone cafés. There are pizzas, oriental dishes, pastas and sandwiches, just to name a few of the choices. Reading through the four or five page, small but well designed menu, one may be lost as to what to try.

A few dishes were sampled for this particular review, the first being a pepperoni pizza, that was quite large in size. The dish was delicious and the reviewer was satisfied with the taste and the content of the meal.

Another choice was the Asian inspired rice and chicken dish that was accented with soy sauce. The dish was a bit on the salty side, and had more rice in proportion to the sparse chicken strips that were mixed into it. If there were more meat to compliment the portion of rice, the dish would be recommendable to Asian food lovers.

The third dish sampled was the club sandwich, which was quite large in its content. The filling, chicken, was creamy and rich. The sandwich came with a large portion of French fries, which were placed in the centre of the plate. Unlike the more conventional club sandwiches that use thin slices of bread that are toasted, this particular sandwich used thick and what appeared to be home baked bread that was not toasted to crunchiness but rather maintained its softness. While eating one part of the sandwich the other parts got a bit soggy because of the rich topping that was put on the filling.

The presentation of the dishes was neat and clean, although two reviewers found the taste of the dishes that they sampled to be unexceptional, with one describing the club sandwich as bland.

 

 
Price        

The prices that are offered for the drinks and food at this establishment range from two Birr to 40 Br. The pizzas go for about 30 Br while the sandwiches range from 18 Br to 24 Br. A macchiato goes for three Birr and there are flavoured teas that offer a 3.50 Br price tag. Although some of the items such as the hot drinks can be deemed expensive, the reasonable pricing of the food and the amount of choices that are offered make the pricing somewhat palatable.

 
 
Environment    

The decor of the café shows that the owners took special care and attention to develop a theme that could be observed no matter what part of the café your eye fell on. As you walk in through the doors, you are confronted with a large rectangular space that has the service bar against the back wall, the furthest from the entrance. You have to walk through the outside seating area, adorned in black metal chairs and tables in order to enter the front door.
 

The left wall of the café is floor to ceiling windows that have been sprayed with a smoked version of the elephants that are the logo of the establishment. The right wall, on the other hand, plays host to a platform section of the café that has a seating area featuring couches and armchairs. The seating is done in off white and reddish upholstery and the mixed and matched furniture add to the eclectic sense of style that is unique to the space. The three stairs leading to it and the platform have been surrounded by metal shapes that have the appearance of being wild vines.
 

A majority of the floor space is covered in round tables that have glass tabletops and leather binding. The chairs are again mixed and matched, although all the choices have the same finishing as the tables that they are surrounding.
 

With white and black tiled floors, the dark leather binding of the furniture is well matched. The ceilings have been accented with a rim made from Gibson stucco and have been painted a shade of dark pink which is lit up by the track lighting placed strategically. In the centre of the square that is formed by the stucco, there are two artificial palm trees. The trunks of the trees serve as a standing table for customers.
 

The right wall, which is the only other wall space in the café, the others being all glass, has been painted in a mural of a troop of elephants walking on safari land during a sun set. The elephants are three dimensional, done in a metal and attached to the background of the safari.
 

Although the location of the café is a very convenient one, the fact that it is on a major avenue does not allow for peace and quiet. There are large crowds at all hours of the day, and the level of noise is quite high.

 
Sanitation        

There is one bathroom with male and female stalls and two sinks that is located adjacent to the cash register next to the service bar in the back of the space. The location of the bathroom is not ideal in that it is located right next to the entrance to the kitchen of the establishment. The small space is done in green tiles and offers two white sinks on the right and left walls. Directly in front of the first entrance are the male and female stalls offering a toilet. The bathroom was clean on the occasion of all the reviews, and offered all the necessary amenities, toilet paper, soap, and mirrors, the only thing that was missing was towels or a hand drier.

 

 
Parking      

The Elephant Walk is located right next to Peacock Café, one of the most popular park and sip spots in town, which means that parking can sometimes be a farfetched dream with the amount of traffic that goes through the small parking area that is made for about 30 cars but often accommodates up to 50.

On one occasion, the reviewer was forced to double-park in order to dine at the café, and then was interrupted during the meal to move the car, which was blocking that of another customer that was ready to leave. Although it is obvious that no additional parking may be available in that area, some sort of an arrangement should be made to ease the congestion for customers that may be repelled by having to wait for a parking spot for more than 10 minutes.

Service        

The number of waiters varied between two and three on separate reviews, all had two females, while there was a third male that appeared to be a head waiter that was spotted on one lunch review.
 

The appearance of the waitresses was wanting in neatness, with their hair unkempt and their aprons slightly dirty on two separate reviews. They all wore black trousers with white shirts, on one review; the waitresses were wearing maroon French aprons over their trousers, but this trend was not maintained throughout all three reviews, with the waitresses not wearing anything on top of their trousers on one occasion.
 

The female waitresses gave below par service, they were not aware of the menu nor were they at the diner's table to take orders, do follow up, or make sure that their customer was comfortable. They were not aware of the contents of the menu, and had difficulties in communicating with foreign patrons, that were spotted on two reviews.


The male waiter was the epitome of good service, clean cut and attractive in appearance, and very knowledgeable about the items on the menu. One reviewer ate a meal based on his recommendation and was completely satisfied. He was well aware of his customers and makes sure that all their needs were met. His attentions went so far as to be stifling after a point, not allowing the lone diner a quiet moment alone.
 

After having gone through the dilemma of dealing with the waitresses that were incapable of taking correct orders, on one review, the waitress brought two wrong dishes after the reviewer mistakenly decided to place an order in English, oddly enough the language that the menu is in; the bills presented to the reviewers at the end of their meal varied. On two occasions a simple computer print out that did not include the name and location nor VAT registration of the restaurant was handed to them. On another occasion, a reviewer was given a hand written bill that was written on a piece of torn off paper, at least they had folded the lines before they began to cut.
 

The reviewers felt that had the service been up to par, then there would have been more cohesion in the overall feel of the eatery. It was agreed that the billing system was something that had to be amended immediately, particularly for customers that like to keep their receipts.

 
 
Food      

 

The menu offers a wonderful assortment of dishes, starting from appetizers to desserts. Fish, poultry, pork and meat lovers are in for wonderful tantalizers to their pallets, with more of a Chinese cooking method to their dishes. The chef is more than happy to come out and tell you what is in the foods that are being offered, as you are to look in the open kitchen and see what he is cooking up.
 

The sweet and sour Nile Perch was not pleasing to the taste buds of one of the reviewers, being more sweet than sour, and adding a mushy and thick taste to the food. The main dishes were all served with vegetable rice, basically white rice with green beans and carrots in it. On two occasions, the rice was served cold, giving the appearance that it had been cooked in anticipation of the lunch and dinner crowds.
 

The Chicken with Vegetables was a very enjoyable dish; the vegetables were crunchy and not over cooked, while the chicken meat was tender and moist. There was a light sauce over the entire dish, although the reviewer could not decide if the taste was that of oyster sauce or duck sauce, but there was something wonderfully familiar about the tang.
 

The Beef with Oyster Sauce, the recommendation of the male waiter, was excellent with balanced flavours that made the meal quite enjoyable.
 

The appetizers were not as exciting as the main dishes, although their tastes were higher in quality than most other eateries in town that offer the same prices. The Beef Dumplings were a bit oily as was the French Onion Soup. It was a bit of a disappointment to the reviewer, not to find the traditional hardened cheese crust on top.
 

The content of all the dishes offered was large in proportion and able to fill any appetite no matter how large it may be. The freshness of the vegetables and all the ingredients in the food was something that deserves commendation, although the presentation was nothing out of the ordinary.

 
 
 
Price      

 

The prices range from 11-45 Br making this eatery a very affordable one. It is more than possible to have a two-course meal with a drink and still stay under 50 Br. The variety of the dishes that are offered, the quality of the food and the environment make the pricing a great deal for any person that wishes to eat out. This is one of the few new dinning institutions in town that is affordable and attractive to not just the lower and middle level  employee, but to the CEO himself.

 
Environment      

The restaurant is situated on the sixth floor of a recently opened building. The main dining area has an open floor with neat tables set for four or six diners. The walls are a bright canary yellow with scarce and tasteful hangings that accent rather than take from the colouring.
 

The tables and chairs are made of a dark green cast iron and upholstered in green and tan patterns. The white table cloths and the fully set tables along with the choice of colours makes the ambiance suitable for quiet dining either in the evening or during the day.
 

The restaurant also offers a large veranda where there are tables set-up, although a remedy has to be found for the flying tablecloths. The open-air area offers a wonderful view of Addis Abeba and is a great place to have lunch or coffee, the lack of windbreakers though may make the seating uncomfortably cold at night.
 

The most appealing feature about this space is the open view that the diner has into the kitchen and all the activity that is going on in there. For a person that is eating alone, or for a conversation piece, this feature of the restaurant makes the dining experience interesting and full of action.

 
 
Sanitation      

The bathrooms were located behind the cashier, a convenient location that is hidden from view for most of the tables in the restaurant. There are others on the left side of the floor that are forced to face the bathroom head on, although luckily the sight is not one that would kill your appetite.
 

As you walk in, there are two common sinks on one side of the room and two doors on the other leading to the male and female toilets. The bathrooms were clean, with all the amenities to choose from, and most importantly smell free. The space is away from both the kitchen and the main dining areas, which is not something that is common in many restaurants across town.
 

On one review, the many rolled up hand towels that were offered had been used up, and there were no clean ones, perhaps more follow-ups would be an easy remedy to this problem.

 

 
 
Parking          

  

This is the worst feature of the restaurant, with diners having to find a parking space in a 10-car lot that has been built for an entire building. During one review, the one available security guard was in a screaming match with two drivers who were yelling at each other over a parking space.

This is the most immediate issue that needs to be resolved as it is more than likely to repel diners who do not want to wait for 30 minutes just to find a parking spot.
