The Board of Directors of
the Addis Abeba Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Association (AACCSA) has passed
a decision to release its Secretary General, Semunesh Dimitros, and her Deputy,
Fekadu Moges.
The Board assigned Teferi
Asfaw, head of the Public Relations and Media Department, as acting deputy
secretary general to run the Chamber as of April 18, 2007. A letter dated on the
same day and copied to banks and the concerned chamber bodies stated that the
signatory powers of Semunesh and Fekadu had been lifted. The letter was signed
by the President of the Chamber, Eyesuswork Zafu.
“I have been in my office
conducting my daily routines, and I had no idea about what was going on”
Semunesh told Fortune.
Semunesh, who was general
manager of the Addis Ababa City Investment Commission, joined AACCSA on March 1,
2005.
Fekadu had already tendered
his resignation prior to the decision releasing him being passed by the Board;
the Board merely accepted his resignation. Management level members that tender
resignations are required to give two months notice prior to vacating their
positions; Fekadu had completed his first month when he was informed of the
decision to accept his resignation.
Five of the 11 member Board
formed a committee, headed by Roberto Iancona, to assess and investigate
complaints that during Semunesh’s time at the Chamber there was a high turnover
of employees.
Teferi, who has been
shouldered with the responsibility of running the Chamber until a new management
is established, told Fortune, “We are planning to reduce the number of
members on the management committee from 12 to three, to make the decision
making process more smooth and effective.”
Until
the time that Fortune went to press this week, Semunesh had maintained
her position and could still be found at her offices.
