The economy is down to its knee; a serious deficit in power provision, estimated by independent experts to have reached 200Mw, has created a sense of desperation among managers of both large scale industries and small businesses in urban centres. Those in charge of managing the nation’s power business urge the public to be patient for one more month. The construction of a new dam, Gilgel Gibe II (below), with a generation capacity of 420Mw electric power, is about to go through a three-phase testing process before it gets commissioned in July 2009. Work on this project is almost complete, with just over 200m left of the tunnel that is instrumental to the start of power generation, writes Omer Redi, Fortune Staff Writer. See the Full Story

Gilgel Gibe II

The latest dam to start generation is Gilgel Gibe II, built by the Italian Salini Costruttori S.p.A. It is a major project the authorities put their faith in, responding to the current crisis created due to a substantial deficit in power provision. The project is about to go through a testing phase, immediately after the construction of the 25.8Km tunnel comes to an end. Only 200m remained last week; one of the four turbines, each with a generation capacity of 105Mw electric power, will be operational in July 2009

Tekeze

The construction of a hydro electric dam (arch-dam) on the river Tekeze, at a gorge bordering the Amhara and Tigray regional states, has been completed. The Chinese construction firm, China Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering Corporation, in joint venture with Sur Construction, has done a marvelous job of erecting what experts say is Ethiopia’s “Three Gorge” dam. It is under testing process; although ready to generate power of 300Mw. Having lost one rainy season due to geological challenges during an earlier construction phase, the dam is waiting for another catchment from the coming major rainy season. Authorities hope tributaries from areas of Lalibela and Sekota will not disappoint them.

Tana Belles

Ethiopia first began to develop Tana Beles back in 1988, before its effort to secure funding from the Africa Development Bank (ADB) was stalled by the lobbying from Egypt. The project has been built by Salini Costruttori S.p.A and incorporates a 20Km tunnel, channeling 315m net head water from a dam already built on Tis Abay II. Construction was launched in July 2005 at a cost of 7.6 billion Br; it has been fully financed by federal budget. When completed in December 2009, now 1.7Km of tunnel remains to be built, Tana Beles will have a generation capacity of 460Mw electric power. All its four turbines, the power house, monitoring room and the switch yard are underground, features that makes this project an engineering marvel.
